How To Read A Food Label

Lesson 4 Module 1

Being able to read a food label correctly is important for managing your caloric intake. Here's a quick guide to what's important, using a specific nutrition label.

What's Important For Energy Balance?

Serving Size:  In this example, there are 4 servings in the container.  However, the nutritional information relates to 1 serving.  So, adjust your calculations based on the number of servings you have.

Calories:  Yes. This is probably the most important thing on the label..

Macros: If you're tracking macros, then you'll need to be aware of:

  • Total Fat
  • Total Carbohydrate
  • Protein

Other elements of the food label that are not essential for managing calorie intake are:

  • Calories from Fat
  • Cholesterol
  • Sodium
  • % Daily Value
  • Vitamins and Minerals

This isn't to say these are unimportant. But you don't specifically need to track these to manage energy balance.
