If Getting In Shape Feels Like A Mindfuck, Here’s 7 Steps To Unfuck Yourself And Create A Positive Mindset

Achieving any goal is HARD (at least the ones worth achieving are). And the pursuit of your dreams can leave you crippled with self-doubt, leading to procrastination and never moving forward. In his book, ‘Unfuck Yourself: Get Out Of Your Head And Into Your Life’, Gary John Bishop lays out 7 personal assertions, promising to bring clarity, drive, and direction to your life. But do they work?

In this article, you’ll discover why negative self-talk is fuel for inactivity and a lack of progress. And by addressing the negative thoughts in your head, you can finally get out of your own way and start achieving great things.

So, if you want to Unfuck Yourself, read on.

Why You Need To Unfuck Yourself

We all talk to ourselves throughout the day. Not out loud, but in your own head.

Often, the thoughts filling your head are not ones of positivity, motivation and inspiration. Instead, they’re negative, crippling, and destructive. And it’s this negative self-talk that leads to procrastination, stress, and a fear of stepping out of your comfort zone.

Ultimately, your fucked up thoughts are what’s stopping you from achieving your goals.

You’re getting in your own way!

And I want to help you change that. After stumbling across ‘Unfuck Yourself: Get Out Of Your Head And Into Your Life’ by Gary John Bishop, I felt the core message of the book would serve as a positive first step in re-wiring your thought patterns for success.

The book certainly doesn’t provide all the answers. And you’ll need more practical tools at your disposal in order to achieve true success. But it’s a start.

This article summarises the 7 personal assertions detailed in the book. Apply these principles into your life to start creating a positive mindset, improve confidence, and make your goals a reality.

Let the unfucking begin.

Unfuck Yourself Step #1: “I Am Willing”

Unfuck Yourself Iron Paradise Fitness

Shit happens in life. You can be as sure of that as death and taxes. Life will always throw you a curveball and put obstacles in your way. But how you choose to deal with those barriers is your choice.

You can opt to see the negative and dwell on every setback, or you can be willing to accept it and move forward.

Because you won’t get anywhere with blame.

Phrases such as, “I don’t want to…” and “I can’t do it…” need to be removed from your vocabulary when it comes to achieving your fitness goals. Allowing these thoughts to creep into your mind is a sure-fire recipe for becoming stuck where you are right now and never moving forward.

For example, going to the gym 3 times a week might be an important part of building the body you’re striving for. So consistently telling yourself “I can’t do it…” or “I’m not a gym-goer…” is likely to leave you rooted at square one (or on the couch!).

Instead, refuse to be the victim. Accept ownership and talk positively about the change in your life. Switch your negative self-talk for positive alternatives like, “I am willing to change this.” or “I’m unwilling to put up with this anymore.”

And you might realise that you’re NOT willing to do these things. Your reality check might help you realise you’re not willing to make the lifestyle changes needed to achieve your goal. And that’s ok. At least you’re being honest and not bullshitting yourself anymore.

Determining what you are willing and not willing to do means you have finally taken control of your thoughts.

Unfuck Yourself Step #2: “I Am Wired To Win”

Limiting beliefs are the ingrained thoughts you believe to be true, but likely have no basis in fact. Often, mere projections of your negative self-talk into a variety of life situations.

The feeling that others are judging you in the gym. The idea you don’t have what it takes. All these things stop progress, before you’ve started.

In reality, you live in a world of opportunity. Where information, support, and guidance is in abundance. There’s never been a time on Earth where you have as much potential to achieve your goals than right now. You’re wired to win!

So you need to rid yourself of limiting beliefs.

Do you believe you’re lazy and unmotivated? Why? What are you constantly failing at and putting off?

Ask yourself the tough questions and answer them honestly. Because this is the only way you can start to unfuck yourself.

Break down your goals into smaller, achievable milestones and address your limiting beliefs. Now embrace the fact you have more chance of winning than losing.

Unfuck Yourself Step #3: “I Got This”

Your past challenges and struggles can positively impact your future (if you let them).

Problems seem overwhelming. However big or small they might appear to others, to you it’s as if the weight of the world is on your shoulders. And that pressure only seems to increase day after day. In turn, the future feels uncertain and filled with doubt.

But think about your fitness goals as a road. Standing in the middle of the road, you look left and see your past. There’s the twists, turns, and obstacles you’ve overcome. Hell, there might have been a few landslides along the way. But you made it through.

Now you look right and see the road ahead. It meanders off into the distance and has similar bumps and roadblocks ahead. It’s daunting and challenging. And while it’ll never be smooth sailing, you’ve been there before and made it through. So take heart from ALL your past experience, both good and bad.

Unfuck your brain and tell yourself, “I got this.”

Unfuck Yourself Step #4: “I Embrace The Uncertainty”

When you’re striving to achieve a new goal and overcome challenges, certainties rarely exist. So a fear of the unknown can be crippling.

As Theodore Roosevelt said, “In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.”

Waiting for the perfect moment where all the stars align is like waiting for Unicorns to shit rainbows. The only thing you can be 100% certain about is that absolute certainty doesn’t exist.

Making excuses and being fearful of taking one wrong step will get you nowhere. Instead, embrace the fact that you WILL fuck up. We all do! But those fuck ups provide opportunities to learn, adjust, course-correct, and move forward.

So stop the paralysis by analysis. Stop looking for the perfect diet, the ultimate training programme, and studying complex theories before you’ve mastered the basics.

Unfuck Yourself Step #5: “I Am Not My Thoughts; I Am What I Do”

So far we’ve talked about how to unfuck yourself by addressing negative self-talk and creating a positive mindset. But this is only half of the solution. You also need to take action.

Staring into the bathroom mirror every morning and chanting various affirmations is one thing. But it’s what you put into practice that makes the difference.

And this principle works to help rationalise your previous mistakes as well as defining your future.

In the past you may have told yourself you were fat, out of shape, unhealthy, and lazy. This negative self-talk is destructive, but it doesn’t define you. And it doesn’t make you fat, out of shape, unhealthy, and lazy.

It’s the actions you take based on repetitive self-talk that determines whether or not your weight spirals out of control or you make unhealthy lifestyle choices. So it’s important you take full control of your actions if you truly want to unfuck yourself.

Even after reading this article you’ll experience negative thoughts from time to time. But remember, it’s the actions you take that matter most.

When negative thoughts creep into your mind, STOP and take an action in the opposite direction. Do something that supports your best interests.

If the whispers of self-destruction tell you to skip the gym and stay home, stop those thoughts in their tracks. Rethink and take positive action.

Unfuck Yourself Step #6: “I Am Relentless”

You aren’t born successful or with the skills to succeed. No-one is.

Bill Gates didn’t pop out of the womb with the blueprint for Windows in his hand. Just like Bruce Lee didn’t spring into the world with a flying ninja kick. They spent time learning, acquiring skills, and doggedly putting in the work.

You see, being successful and achieving your goals will take effort. But not one-off effort. Consistent effort. Relentless application over weeks, months, and years. And it’s important to have this realisation early in your journey. Because if you haven’t got a mindset of relentless consistency, you’re likely to crumble at the first sign of a setback.

Building muscle takes time. One workout won’t cut it. In fact, for most people, you’ll need to put in the hard reps for a lot longer than you realise.

And when it comes to your diet, one chicken salad isn’t going to undo years of poor lifestyle decisions. You need to create positive habits and behaviours that support your long-term aspirations. And that takes time, patience, and consistency.

Being relentless is repeatedly taking action to facilitate progress, regardless of what’s going on in life.

Ultimately, life doesn’t give a fuck about your issues and struggles. Time keeps rolling on. So you need to resist the temptation to dwell. Instead, be relentless.

Unfuck Yourself Step #7: “I Expect Nothing And Accept Everything”

The last step you need to take to unfuck yourself is to expect nothing and accept everything!

In the past, whether related to diet or your efforts to build muscle, the disconnect between expectation and outcome often derails you.

Your expectation may have been to lose weight consistently, day-after-day, week-after-week. But when things didn’t go as planned, you got frustrated, disheartened, and possibly threw in the towel.

Does this mean you shouldn’t set ambitious goals? Hell no.

But you do need to make sure those goals are achievable and you have a well-defined plan of making them a reality. Added to that, you need to have the mindset that your plans are never set in stone. You can adjust and course-correct as you accept setbacks and continue to move forward.

So set your expectations from the outset, accept setbacks as part of the process, roll with the punches, and move forward.

The Bottom Line On How To Create A Positive Mindset

The ideas laid out in ‘Unfuck Yourself’ may not be anything you haven’t heard in a million self-help books before. But there is validity to the ideas put forward in the book. And these might find you at a time and place in your life when you need them most.

‘Unfuck Yourself’ is unlikely to win any literary awards. And it doesn’t offer a huge amount of practical strategies for implementing the concepts within the book. But it does have some value.

Sometimes you need to hear the right words to kickstart and motivate you into action. A literary wake up call serving to realign your thoughts and mindset. And for you, the 7 personal assertions in this book, might be the slap in the face you need.

Here’s 5 key takeaways I took from the book:

  1. Move Forward: Take positive action that propels you forward. Don’t allow negative thoughts to govern your actions.
  2. Do!: Positive self-talk is one thing, but action makes things happen. Start doing!
  3. Remove The Excuse: Life doesn’t listen to your excuses. It’s ruthless. Remove your excuses if you want to succeed.
  4. Stop Doing Dumb Shit: Who and what is getting in the way of your success? Remove this shit from your life.
  5. Start Doing More Positive Things: What things add to your life and keep you pushing forward? Do more of that, consistently.

How you frame the roadblocks and challenges standing in your way will play a significant role in whether or not you achieve your fitness goals. If you continue to dwell on the negative and convince yourself you can’t, then you won’t.

So stop getting in your own way. Unfuck yourself and start taking action.
